BLOODY RIGHT! New study finds Canada leads U.S. in true crime obsession – Toronto Sun

Beautiful black widows, serial killers and scammers are ubiquitous in today’s blood-soaked popular culture.

TV, podcasts, books, and movie production has been ramped up to quench the public’s insatiable appetite for the true crime genre. Most recently, fans have been mesmerized by fraudster docs, Inventing Anna and the Tinder Swindler.

Now, a new study is revealing that Canadians are among the top consumers of true crime, coming in at number four globally behind Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Canada was one spot ahead of true crime’s spiritual homeland, the United States.

The survey from TopRatedCasinos revealed Aussies have a keen interest in true crime movies and podcasts while the U.K. shares the cinematic passion. The Irish listen to more true crime podcasts that anywhere else. The U.S. consumes the most true crime TV.

Meanwhile, north of the border, Inventing Anna is most popular in Canada with the maximum popularity score.

This documentary follows a journalist who is investigating the rise and fall of Anna Delvey, who convinces New York’s elite that she is a wealthy German heiress. Directed by Shonda Rhimes, this miniseries incorporates fact and fiction.

The Irish also liked the Netflix blockbuster — a lot.

One of Netflix’s other popular recent releases is Catching Killers, which also tops the charts in Canada with a maximum popularity score of 100.

This series has had two seasons to date, with its retelling of some of the most horrific serial killer cases from around the world. The show is also a smash in Ireland and Hong Kong.

Murder Among Mormons on Netflix was tops in the U.S. in 2021 followed by Canada and Australia.

Another recent addition to true crime canon is Crime Scene: Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel (February 2021), which is most popular in Ireland. This series chronicles the disturbing and peculiar death of Elisa Lam at the hotel.

It is also popular in the U.K. and the U.S.

Released shortly after is the Night Stalker: Hunt For A Killer (January 2021). This grisly story of a serial killer haunting California in the 1980s is most popular in Ireland.

According to TopRatedCasinos, researchers collated a list of the 20 most popular true crime series on Netflix from sources such as Vulture and Netflix Todum.
They then used Google Trends to find out search interest in the most recently released series on Netflix.

Experts also looked at true crime as a general topic, finding search trends for the topic within books and literature, programs and tv shows, as well as films.
